I think Bandcamp does this sort of thing?

MOSTLY, they take a small percentage for use of their site but it’s PALTRY compared to say iTunes or physical sales through major labels etc. i.e. they’re fantastic babbies and they get all my hugs.

Yes absolutely. If you’re a new artist, Bandcamp takes 15%. After you hit a certain total of $ in sales (ie you’re successful on Bandcamp), that becomes 10%. But the service they offer is the best I’ve seen for any music platform, even above established mainstream platforms like iTunes and Amazon.
Combine the stats that Bandcamp provides with a site like Bandalizer.com, and you have the single most useful thing that could ever be available for a musician.
tldr Bandcamp is fantastic babbies and deserve your love

I’m curious if anyone has any data on what kind of profits they make. The deal they offer is so fantastic for artists, compared to the average platform, that I wonder how well that works out for them financially - and if they’re well off enough, why more platforms don’t offer similar models.

never gonna stop reblogging bandcamp praise
as an side to the above reblog: in the past 30 days artists have made $1mil USD on bandcamp in total. that $125,000 (taking the average between 15% and 10% payoffs to them) for bandcamp. i believe that should cover the bandwidth and wages nicely :]
i’ll be damned if they don’t deserve every bit they get, though. amazing, amazing service that i hope continues to exist for a long goddamned time. when i see that somebody’s selling through bandcamp there are no second thoughts, just “excellent, this will be painless”
other platforms don’t offer this kind of service because they don’t get rich enough. “hey, this is profitable!” can go sour really quickly.
